Thank you for the post, mamaw.
Yes, it hurts. But she had a long and very happy life. Was 101 by human years.
Seems like she was part of our family forever.
She was the last of our first family of 2 cats, my Dreamer doggie and two of Dreamer's offspring. I hope they are all together again now.
We have started our second family with 2-year-old Buddy doggie and 2-year-old Rusty doggie.

I feel your pain {{{{Bobbi}}}}
This helped me when Kittles passed away recently.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Sorry I am so late to getting your post, but I know what you are going through. The hardest thing I ever had to face was in 1999, when Yum Yum had acute kidney failure. The only thing there was to do is put her to sleep. She knew it was time to go, and I held her in my arms all night long in the recliner. She looked at me with those eyes and said it was time.
I never had to put a cat to sleep, so we went the next morning taking her on the bus in her carrier. She was a Siameze and everyone was talking about how pretty she was. I didn't have the heart to tell them where we were really going. I took her in, and the vet came out. We both went into the back room on the table. He said that she wouldn't even feel a thing, but she looked at me and I couldn't stop crying. She was so peaceful even while sitting on the cold counter. She was still looking at me, when he injected her, but she never closed her eyes. She just looked, no pain, then she was gone. We got her a few years before from a kennel that recues abused and abandon animals. They are good friends of ours. The two years she had with use was a blessing for both us and her. On the way home, I wrote a special poem for her that I would like to share. I hope I didn't re-open a sad moment from last week.
