Winner 1: AJSANDIEGO
One of my fondest memories centers on my childhood. I lived in a rural township in central Illinois. Our community covered a 10 block by 8 block area. I was the youngest out of 14 children, and most of the families were large. All the children knew each other, played, fought, and went to school together.
My dad worked for the railroad, and every Halloween, we would have a big barbeque. We called it a Weenie Roast. My dad would bring home some railroad ties and that was used as our barbequing fire. Each tie was about three feet long. We celebrated the end of Indian summer and the beginning of winter. People would bring side dishes, and we would prepare the main item. A few days before the party, we would take pillow cases out to the farms and fill them up with fresh corn on the cob. We would then soak them in water for at least 24 hours. The night of the party we would roast the hot dogs and corn on the cob over the open coals. On average there would be around 150 neighbors in attendance. We play music, dance, play games, and then all the children would go out trick or treating.
In today's world, people don't even get to know their next door neighbors, let alone an entire community, and believe me they don't know what their missing. The party will always be one of my greatest memories.
Congratulations, $500 goes to AJSANDIEGO!
