As we celebrate the first decade of the 21st century, lets look back a century ago
on the groundbreaking inventions that changed everyone lives.

One full century ago, people were talking about these groundbreaking technologies

Electricity led the charge of developments, by 1910 that were changing the way people lived every day.

Many suburban homes had been wired up with power and new electric gadgets.
Vacuum cleaners and washing machines had just become commercially available,
(though were still too expensive for many middle-class families)

Millions of American homes were connected to the telephone by manual switchboard.
(Those who did not have a phone to call their neighbor still had to rely on the paper for their news)
(though radio technology was in its infancy, regular broadcasts were still several years away.)

Transportation began the 20th century that brought a century of driving 10 MPH to flying in space.

1901 began the big craze for dirigibles like the Zeppelin,
1903 brought the age of heading to the skies with the Wright Brothers historic flight at Kitty Hawk.
1908 brought the introduction of the Model T by Henry Ford.
(making automobiles available and affordable to the masses for the first time)

Chemistry also charged full steam ahead in 1910.

Advances in the use of gases chilled the World Out, bringing
The first electric refrigerators and air-conditioning units.
French inventor Georges Claude harnessed nion in glass tubes and debuted neon lighting in Paris
(Changing the face of seedy advertising forever)

Other notable new inventions, both influential and inane, that were making waves once century ago

Bakelite plastic
Escalators
Teabags
Cellophane
Instant Coffee
Disposable razors

The World was modernizing quickly by 1910, but some everyday things we take for granted now were then still just a glimmer in their inventors eyes.

Before 1913, men were still relying on buttons and women on painful corsets,
then technology got a boost with the development of the zipper and modern brassiere.
(Unfortunate zipper accidents likely healed better with the invention of the modern Band-Aid,
which came about seven years later.)

Steel turned rusty until mid-decade, when the stainless variety usered in a new era of efficient gun barrels and, later, shiny appliances.

Finally, though the pop-up toaster first hit the market in 1919, the public had to wait almost ten years for its practicality to be fully realized.
The "greatest thing" of the modern age, the one invention against which all others are now compare to - sliced bread was born in Missouri in 1918.

The dawn of 2010 promises more amazing developments in the world of technology.

Tourist can visit space (for a price)
Nearly everything and everyone is going digital
Medical science continues to test the boundaries of what makes us truly human.

(Other not so known inventions)

Vacuum Cleaner Diagnoses Own Problems
New fan has no blades
Lamp runs on Human Blood
Paper-thin batteries made from Algea
New Device Prints Human Tissue

Hmmm printing human tissue... I could see how it could be useful for burn victims and such but that seems so weird!

I love all this history stuff in technology. I think it is totally fascinating.

Thanks for the read!!!!

Lamp Runs on Human Blood

This is how the lamp works and the guy that inventd it stated his reason behind it.

What if, every time you wanted to switch on a light, you had to bleed? Would you think twice before illuminating the room, and in turn, using up energy?

That's the idea behind the blood lamp, invented by Mike Thomspon, an English designer based in The Netherlands. The lamp contains luminol, the same chemical forensic scientists use to check for traces of blood at a crime scence. Luminol reacts with the iron in red blood cells and creates a bright blue glow.
To use the lamp, you first need to mix in an activating powder. Then, you break the glass, cut yourself, and drip blood into the opening.

If you had to cut and drip blood every time you wanted to turn on a light, you would think twice before using up energy resources.
