IN 1987 my best friend was diagnosed as HIV+, luckily he had health insurance through his employer.
The doctor treatments with the medication kept him healthy all these years.
In April 2008, he was laid off of his job and lost his medical insurance. Signed up for unemployment
(a big pay difference), but he could not afford the monthly precription prices of $2,000.
He tried to get Medicaid, or government sponsored health care, but was told that he made too
much money. TOO MUCH MONEY on unemployment, go figure. He was very active, healthy,
and looked very good. Well during the rest of 2008 and part of 2009 he was not able to find
another job (remained on unemployment) and still no health care. He started losing weight,
and having other medical complications. Finally in September 2009 he qualified for
(The Ryan White Health Care Act), that was inacted in the 1990's, but lost it's funding during Bush's Presidency.
The funds were reinacted this year.
Finally got to see a medical doctor, diagnosis (Full Blown AIDS). I was diagnosed as permantly
disabled and started a regiment of over 12 different prescriptions. He has more complications
that I won't get into (Not for the faint of heart), and I help him with a lot of his daily routine.
If we had health coverage for all, he would have been able to continue his other medication and
hopefully would have kept him from getting this dreadful disease.
So the cost of providing heealth care for everyone outweighs the cost of providing more serious health costs later.
Support Health Coverage for Everyone. We are the only Western Civilized Nation that do
not provide health care for everyone.
Just thought I would blow off steam over my fustration.
