we do not hang ours. We fill them and after we stack all the gifts under the tree we lean the stockings up against them so they are standing in front of the pile of gifts.

we generally hung them near or around the tree, but with 2 extras for the pets, we lined them up the stairwell

Like chas24, no fireplace needed in Texas but my Grandson has a room at my house for his visits. He always stays with us when he's out for the holidays. I empty his bookcase, fill it with decorations and his stocking hangs there. We have a tradition that started when his Mom was a child. The stocking is filled with 7 presents and he gets to open one every day the week before Christmas.
